Heb je genoeg in de zon gelegen? Dan zijn er ook andere dingen te doen. Je kan bijvoorbeeld naar een museum of een dagje gaan shoppen. Eerst maar een beetje cultuur, vind je niet?

Es Baluard – museum voor moderne kunst (Palma)
Het gebouw is een prachtige combinatie van architectuur uit de 16de en 21ste eeuw. De strakke moderne lijnen van de nieuwbouw hebben de oude muren van het Renaissaince bastion volledig in hun waarde gelaten. Alleen dit is al een feest om te zien. Op het dak van het museum heb je een prachtig uitzicht over Palma en haar kathedraal.  De collectie moderne kunst wordt tot de belangrijkste van Spanje gerekend. Dit kleine museum is echt een aanrader.

Joan Miró (Palma)
Deze beroemde Spaanse schilder besloot in 1956 om zich permanent in Mallorca te vestigen. Hij liet een moderne studio bouwen aan de rand van Palma. Drie jaar later kon hij het aangrenzende Son Boter kopen; een groot stuk grond met daarop een 18de-eeuws huis. Daar maakte hij zijn studio van.  De muren van dit huis heeft hij voorzien van graffiti, die de bijzondere creativiteit van Miró nog eens benadrukken. Neem vooral de tijd om dit te zien. Het moderne atelier ziet eruit alsof hij even een ommetje is gaan maken. Er staan veel schilderijen op de grond of op ezels, de kwasten en verf staan klaar om te worden gebruikt en je ziet over een balustrade zijn werkkleding nog hangen. Op deze manier voel je je heel dicht bij de schilder. Niet aarzelen, maar gaan dus! Ga wel met een taxi, het is namelijk te ver om te lopen of te fietsen.

Chopin (Valldemossa)
Een dagtripje naar Valldemossa is een echte aanrader. Het is namelijk maar 20 minuten rijden van Palma. Ga in ieder geval naar het Karthuizer klooster. Daar ontvluchtten Frédéric Chopin en Georges Sand in 1838 de roddels over hun relatie door er een cel te huren. Het is hun letterlijk niet in de koude kleren gaan zitten. Chopin ontwikkelde tbc, zijn piano kwam niet aan en de bewoners waren niet echt aardig tegen hen. Kortom hun relatie werd behoorlijk op de proef gesteld.

Het korte verblijf van het omstreden paar had wel tot gevolg dat Valldemossa een ‘must see’ is geworden. Het is nu een schattig stadje waar leuke restaurantjes zijn gevestigd (o.a. Cappuccino). Het zou zo maar kunnen dat je een beroemdheid tegen het lijf loopt in een van de schattige straatjes. Michael Douglas heeft er tot voor kort een prachtig huis gehad. Het ligt even buiten het dorpje richting Deià. Als je dan toch onderweg bent, ga hier ook naar toe en drink iets in La Residencia. Of reserveer er voor de Afternoon Tea, volgens velen de beste van het eiland.

Natuurlijk zijn er nog veel meer culturele uitstapjes te maken. Dit is maar een kleine keuze. Kijk eens op abcmallorca voor meer tips.

The building is a beautiful combination of architecture from the 16th and 21st centuries. The clean modern lines of the new building have left the old walls of the Renaissaince bastion completely intact. This alone is a feast for the eyes. The roof of the museum offers a magnificent view of Palma and its cathedral.  The collection of modern art is considered to be one of the most important in Spain. This small museum is really worth a visit.

_{Joan Miró (Palma)
This famous Spanish painter decided to settle permanently in Mallorca in 1956. He had a modern studio built on the outskirts of Palma. Three years later he was able to buy the adjoining Son Butter, a large piece of land with an 18th-century house on it. He turned it into his studio.  He covered the walls of this house with graffiti, which underlines Miró’s extraordinary creativity. Take your time to see this. The modern studio looks as if he has just gone for a walk. There are many paintings on the floor or on easels, brushes and paints are ready to be used and you can still see his work clothes hanging over a balustrade. In this way, you feel very close to the painter. So don’t hesitate, go! But do go by taxi, because it is too far to walk or cycle.

_{Chopin (Valldemossa)
A day trip to Valldemossa is highly recommended. It is only a 20 minute drive from Palma. Be sure to visit the Carthusian monastery. This is where, in 1838, Frédéric Chopin and Georges Sand escaped the gossip about their relationship by renting a cell. This did not sit well with them. Chopin developed tuberculosis, his piano did not arrive and the residents were not very nice to them. In short, their relationship was put to the test.

_{The short stay of the controversial couple did result in Valldemossa becoming a ‘must see’. It is now a cute little town with nice restaurants (such as Cappuccino). If you are on the road anyway, go there and have a drink in La Residencia. Or make reservations for the Afternoon Tea, according to many the best on the island.}
