(English below – sleeping in Oslo)

Omdat mijn zusje in Oslo woont, kom ik daar de laatste jaren regelmatig.

Mijn zusje combineert een druk gezin met drie opgroeiende jongens met een fulltime baan als leraar aan de Oslo International School. Haar man is bezig met een startup en daarom vaak van huis. De laatste keer dat ik naar Oslo ging (pre COVID) heb ik haar daarom getrakteerd op een nachtje slapen in het centrum van Oslo, zodat ze een beetje kon bijkomen en wij ‘meisjesdingen’ konden doen.

COVID was natuurlijk wel een boosdoener, dus ik was blij dat ik in mei 2022 na drie jaar eindelijk weer mijn koffer kon pakken. Ik ging samen met een lieve vriendin en wij besloten niet bij mijn zusje te gaan logeren, maar een hotel te boeken.

De hotels heb ik puur op locatie geboekt, omdat ik dichtbij alle hotspots wilde zitten. Ze zijn een beetje hip en – heel Scandinavisch – super schoon. De eerste keer sliep ik in het Nordic Choice Comfort Hotel Grand Central. Dit hotel ligt aan het centraal station van Oslo. Wees vooral niet bang dat je ‘s nachts wordt wakker gehouden door het treinverkeer, want het zit heel ver van de perrons; je merkt er echt niets van. Ik kan niet van huis zonder oordoppen, omdat ik zo licht slaap en ik had ze in dit hotel niet eens nodig!

De laatste keer boekte ik Nordic Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station. Je ziet het al aan de naam: een zuster hotel. De kamers waren opvallend stil. Ook weer prima gelegen, 200 meter lopen van het station. 

In beide hotels had ik geen ontbijt geboekt. Ik vind het veel leuker om te ontbijten tussen de bewoners van de stad die ik bezoek. Tips voor ontbijt zal ik je later geven.

Natuurlijk zijn er ook andere, chiquere hotels in Oslo. Aanraders waar ik wel ben geweest, maar niet heb geslapen:

The Thief (als je van Noorse series houdt zie je dit hotel vaak voorbijkomen). Dit superdeluxe designhotel heeft een hele hippe rooftop cocktailbar waar je ook naar toe kan als je er niet slaapt. Vanaf het terras op de negende etage heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de Oslo fjord. Het ligt vlakbij Aker Brygge, een gebied dat is herontwikkeld door de gemeente Oslo na het faillissement van de daar gevestigde scheepswerf.

Amerikalinjen Oslo. Aan de overkant van het station. Ze hebben hier een hele leuke loungebar waar je de meest heerlijke cocktails kunt bestellen. Verder is er regelmatig live jazz in de kelder. Hou hiervoor hun agenda in de gaten! Ook als je hier niet slaapt kan je uiteraard gebruik maken van deze faciliteiten.

Sleeping in Oslo

Since my sister lives in Oslo for several years now, I have been coming there regularly in recent years.
My sister combines a busy family with three growing boys with a full-time job as a teacher at the Oslo International School. Her husband is working on a start-up and is therefore often away from home. So the last time I went to Oslo (pre COVID), I treated her to a night’s sleep in the centre of Oslo so that she could recover a bit and we could do ‘girl things’.
COVID was of course a culprit, so I was happy to finally pack my bags again in May 2022 after three years. I went with a dear friend and we decided not to stay with my sister, but to book a hotel.
I booked the hotels purely on location, because I wanted to be close to all the hotspots. They are a bit hip and – very Scandinavian – super clean. The first time I slept in the Nordic Choice Comfort Hotel Grand Central. This hotel is located at the main train station in Oslo. Don’t worry about being kept awake at night by the train traffic as it is very far from the platforms; you won’t even notice it. I can’t leave home without earplugs because I sleep so lightly and I didn’t even need them in this hotel.

Last time I booked Nordic Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station. You can tell by the name: a sister hotel. The rooms were remarkably quiet. Again, well located, 200 metres walk from the station. 

In both hotels I had not booked breakfast. I find it much nicer to have breakfast among the residents of the city I am visiting. Tips for breakfast I will give you later.

Of course, there are other, fancier hotels in Oslo. Some places I have been to but not slept:

The Thief (if you like Norwegian series, you will often see this hotel). This super deluxe design hotel has a very hip rooftop cocktail bar that you can also go to when you’re not sleeping there. From the terrace on the ninth floor, you have a beautiful view of the Oslo fjord. It is near Aker Brygge, an area redeveloped by Oslo City Council after the shipyard there went bankrupt.

Amerikalinjen Oslo. Across from the station. They have a very nice lounge bar where you can order the most delicious cocktails. Furthermore, there is regularly live jazz in the basement. Keep an eye on their agenda! Even if you don’t sleep here, you can still make use of these facilities.
