Aangestoken door enthousiaste verhalen van mijn zusje Roos, besloot ik op avontuur te gaan in het noordoosten van Spanje: Girona, Begur en Cadaqués. Na tien dagen kwam ik heerlijk ontspannen terug met een hoofd vol prachtige ervaringen. De komende dagen zal ik jullie laten meegenieten.

Vanaf Rotterdam heb je gedurende de zomerperiode bijna dagelijks diverse Transavia vluchten naar Girona. Van tevoren had ik Nederland een huurauto geregeld. Dat is veruit de goedkoopste manier om je in dit gebied te vervoeren. De afstanden zijn in kilometers niet zo groot, maar in tijd des te langer. Taxi’s zijn daarom best kostbaar en ander openbaar vervoer is geen optie.

Ik had gekozen voor een vlucht op zaterdagavond. In twee uur zit je in Girona. Vanaf het vliegveld doet de taxi er ongeveer 15 minuten over om naar het centrum van de stad te rijden (kosten €25,00).

GIRONA (Gerona in het Catalaans) – 27 juni t/m 29 juni 2015

Ik had voor twee nachten een kamer gereserveerd in Hotel Nord 1901. Een klein hotel middenin in het centrum, met redelijke prijzen, denk aan een kamer rond €120,00 per nacht. Het bleek dat ik een gratis upgrade had gekregen: een kamer waar je met gemak met vier personen kan slapen. Een groot bed met twee aparte matrassen en een bedbank, die eventueel tot tweepersoonsbed kan worden omgetoverd. Het was eigenlijk een appartementje, want er was ook nog een keukenblokje met ijskast, fornuis etc. Een van de weinige hotels in Girona centrum met een (piepklein) zwembad. Ik was helemaal niet van plan daar in de zon te gaan liggen. Maar als je de stad hebt verkend is het aan het eind van de dag wel heerlijk om er even een duik te nemen en vervolgens met een glas knisperend koele wijn een beetje bij te komen.

Omdat ik laat in de avond aankwam had ik in Nederland al gekeken waar ik op loopafstand een leuk restaurant kon vinden om nog iets kleins te eten. Dat bleek aan de overkant van het hotel, Restaurant Blanc. Onderdeel van een keten met een aantal restaurants in o.a. Barcelona. Ze hebben leuke, lekkere, betaalbare gerechtjes. Zijn tot 23.00 uur open, kan je meteen aan de Spaanse tijden wennen. Overdag hebben ze zelfs een lunchmenu van ongeveer 10 euro!

De volgende dag – zondag – had ik een stadswandeling bedacht. Tijdens het ontbijt in het hotel heb ik het kaartje van Girona bestudeerd (vraag even een stadsplattegrond bij de receptie) en ik had me thuis al goed ingelezen wat ik wilde doen.

Eerst natuurlijk even koffie drinken. Om de hoek van het hotel zit een groot plein: Placa Independencia. Bij Cafe Royal hebben ze heerlijke koffie en croissantjes.
Daarna het toeristische treintje gepakt om de stad op een gemakkelijke manier te verkennen (duur: 40 minuten). Je kan opstappen bij de Pont de Pedra. Dit tochtje duurt een uur. Daarna weet je waar je terug wil. Ik heb vervolgens lang gewandeld in de buurt rond de kathedraal en de Joodse wijk.

Tijdens het wandelen heerlijk geluncht bij een kleine delicatessenwinkel annex wijnbar (op zondag is er niet veel open, dus het was even zoeken). Piepklein terrasje, goede wijn en kleine lunchgerechtjes: La Simfonia.

Tijdens mijn wandeling zag ik ook nog een paar andere leuke restaurants. O.a. Arros i Peix (rijst en vis). Helaas zat het vol anders was ik hier zeker gaan eten. In hun gekoelde etalage stonden scheermessen rechtop in het ijs! Gelukkig heb ik later ergens anders nog scheermessen kunnen eten. Zo jammer dat je dat in Nederland bijna niet kan krijgen. En ander adres waar ik niet ben geweest, maar dat een absolute aanrader is Restaurant Brots de Vi.

De stadskern van Girona is echt prachtig. De rivier de Onyar loopt er doorheen. Er zijn veel bruggetjes om steeds weer naar de andere kant over te steken. Je loopt van het ene in het andere straatje. Alle winkels waren dicht op zondag. Maar ik ben maandagochtend terug gegaan, want ik had in een winkel onder de arcades een paar leuke, betaalbare schoenen gezien die ik móést hebben, haha!

Maandagmiddag ben ik met mijn koffer per taxi naar het station gegaan om mijn huurauto op te halen. Maak niet dezelfde fout als ik. Ik ging er namelijk van uit dat Europcar continu open zou zijn. Not! Wel op het vliegveld, maar niet in de stad. Ze zijn van 14.00 tot 15.30 uur gesloten. Ik was er om 14.05! Nou ja, niets aan te doen. Even zitten wachten in de koele stationshal. Heb er nog wel een subtiele opmerking over gemaakt en ik kreeg vervolgens in plaats van de gereserveerde FIAT 500 een luxe Renault Megane Coupé, geen verkeerde deal.

ALGEMENE CONCLUSIE:
Girona is een prachtige oude stad, die de moeite waard is om te bezoeken. Het was er niet druk, maar wellicht dat ik de goede keuze heb gemaakt voor de periode. Zoals ik van Spanje gewend ben is alles hier heel betaalbaar. Ik ben niet in het Film Museum geweest, maar dat zal ik een volgende keer zeker doen.

Encouraged by the enthusiastic stories of my sister Roos, I decided to go on an adventure in the north-east of Spain: Girona, Begur and Cadaqués. After ten days, I came back relaxed with a head full of wonderful experiences. In the coming days, I will let you enjoy it with me.

During the summer period, there are almost daily Transavia flights from Rotterdam to Girona. I had arranged a rental car in the Netherlands in advance. That is by far the cheapest way to transport yourself in this area. The distances are not so big in kilometres, but in time all the more. Taxis are therefore quite expensive and other public transport is not an option.

I had chosen a flight on Saturday evening. In two hours you are in Girona. From the airport, the taxi takes about 15 minutes to drive to the city centre (costs €25.00).

GIRONA (Gerona in Catalan) – 27 June to 29 June 2015
I had booked a room for two nights at Hotel Nord 1901. A small hotel right in the centre, with reasonable prices, think a room around €120.00 per night. It turned out that I had received a free upgrade: a room where you can easily sleep with four people. A large bed with two separate mattresses and a sofa bed, which could be turned into a double bed. It was actually a flat, because there was also a kitchenette with a fridge, cooker, etc. One of the few hotels in Girona centre with a (tiny) swimming pool. I had no intention of lying there in the sun. But if you have explored the city, it is lovely to take a dip at the end of the day and then recover a bit with a glass of crisp, cool wine.

Because I arrived late in the evening, I had already looked in the Netherlands where I could find a nice restaurant within walking distance to eat something small. That turned out to be across the street from the hotel: Restaurant Blanc. Part of a chain with a number of restaurants in Barcelona and other places. They have nice, tasty, affordable dishes. They are open till 23.00, so you can get used to the Spanish times. During the day, they even have a lunch menu for about 10 euros!

The next day – Sunday – I had planned a city walk. During breakfast at the hotel, I studied the map of Girona (ask for a city map at reception) and I had already read at home what I wanted to do.

First, of course, a coffee. Around the corner of the hotel is a large square: Placa Independencia. At Cafe Royal, they serve delicious coffee and croissants.

Then I took the tourist train to explore the city the easy way (duration: 40 minutes). You can get off at the Pont de Pedra. This trip takes one hour. Afterwards, you know where you want to go back to. I then had a long walk in the area around the cathedral and the Jewish quarter.

While walking, I had a delicious lunch at a small delicatessen annex wine bar (not many are open on Sundays, so it took some searching). Tiny terrace, good wine and small lunch dishes: La Simfonia.

During my walk, I also saw some other nice restaurants. Among others Arros i Peix (rice and fish). Unfortunately it was full otherwise I would have definitely eaten here. In their refrigerated shop window there were razor blades standing upright in the ice! Fortunately, I was able to eat razor shells somewhere else later on. Such a pity that you can’t get them in the Netherlands. Another address I didn’t go to, but highly recommend, is Restaurant Brots de Vi.

The city centre of Girona is really beautiful. The river Onyar runs through it. There are many little bridges to cross over to the other side. You walk from one street to another. All the shops were closed on Sunday. But I went back on Monday morning, because I had seen a nice, affordable pair of shoes in a shop under the arcades that I just had to have, haha!

Monday afternoon I went with my suitcase by taxi to the station to pick up my hire car. Don’t make the same mistake as me. I assumed that Europcar would be open all the time. Not so! At the airport, but not in the city. They are closed from 2pm to 3.30pm. I was there at 14.05! Well, nothing to do about it. Just sat waiting in the cool station hall. I did make a subtle remark about it and then instead of the reserved FIAT 500 I got a luxurious Renault Megane Coupe, not a bad deal.

GENERAL CONCLUSION:
Girona is a beautiful old city that is worth visiting. It was not crowded, but maybe I made the right choice for the period. As I am used to from Spain, everything here is very affordable. I have not been to the Film Museum, but I will certainly do that next time.
