Als ik een jaar niet naar mijn lievelings vakantieplek Mallorca ga, heb ik het idee dat ik helemaal niet met vakantie ben geweest! Zo’n jaar of zeventien geleden ben ik verliefd geworden op dit eiland. Sindsdien kom ik er zeker een keer per jaar, soms wel vaker. Regelmatig zie ik opgetrokken wenkbrauwen als ik vertel dat ik hier ieder jaar naar toe ga. Natuurlijk de drankzuchtige Engelsen, Duitsers en ook Nederlanders zullen er ongetwijfeld zijn, maar geloof me ik ben ze nog nooit tegengekomen. Mallorca is chique en Palma wordt steeds hipper. Als Valencia mini-Barcelona is dan is de hoofdstad Palma mini-Valencia. Je vindt er prachtige gebouwen en interessante musea, gecombineerd met de mooiste winkels en de hipste restaurants.

Mijn favoriete stekje ligt vlakbij Palma de Mallorca, de hoofdstad. Vijf minuten met de taxi of een kwartiertje fietsen (doen! hierover later). Het liefst kwam ik in Portixol, maar de laatste jaren kies ik ook voor El Molinar, Sollér, of Santanyí.. De hotels van de stadjes samen zijn op een hand te tellen, lelijke hoogbouw is er niet te vinden. In een aantal delen zal ik je proberen te vertellen waarom ik het er nou zo leuk vind.

Slapen…. niet onbelangrijk, toch? Hieronder geef ik je een aantal adressen waar ik zelf heb geslapen.

_{If I don’t go to my favourite holiday spot, Mallorca, for a year, I feel like I haven’t been on holiday at all! About seventeen years ago, I fell in love with this island. Since then, I visit it at least once a year, sometimes more. I often see raised eyebrows when I tell people that I come here every year. Of course, the boozy English, Germans and also Dutch will undoubtedly be there, but believe me I have never come across them. Mallorca is chic and Palma is getting hipper. If Valencia is mini-Barcelona, the capital Palma is mini-Valencia. You will find beautiful buildings and interesting museums, combined with the most beautiful shops and the hippest restaurants.
My favourite spot is near Palma de Mallorca, the capital. Five minutes by taxi or a quarter of an hour by bike (to be done later). I prefer Portixol, but in recent years I also choose El Molinar, Sollér or Santanyí. The hotels of the towns together can be counted on one hand, ugly high-rise buildings are not to be found. In some parts I will try to tell you why I like it so much.

HOTEL PORTIXOL ****
Mijn grote favoriet totdat ik vond dat het (voor mij) te kostbaar werd. Zo’n twintig jaar geleden werd dit hotel door een Zweeds echtpaar volledig gerenoveerd. Toen ik er voor het eerst kwam vond ik de retro Scandinavisch inrichting een verademing. Het grappige is, dat dat nu wereldwijd helemaal de trend is. Ze waren hun tijd ver vooruit. Het hotel heeft maar 26 kamers, waarvan een aantal uitkijkt op zee of op de prachtige kathedraal van Palma. Het ontbijt is een feest. Het zwembad is klein en rustig. De medewerkers zijn uiterst voorkomend en zij herkennen je als je er een aantal keren bent geweest. Dit hotel kan ik iedereen aanraden. Ze hebben ook een heel goed, betaalbaar restaurant waar zelfs de Mallorcanen komen eten.

^{_{My favourite until I found it too expensive (for me). About twenty-five years ago, this hotel was completely renovated by a Swedish couple. When I first visited, I found the retro Scandinavian decor a breath of fresh air. The funny thing is that this is now the trend worldwide. They were ahead of their time. The hotel has only 26 rooms, some of which overlook the sea or Palma’s magnificent cathedral. The breakfast is a feast. The pool is small and quiet. The staff are extremely courteous and they recognise you when you have been there several times. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. They also have a very good, affordable restaurant where even the Mallorcans come to eat.

HOTEL SANT FRANCESC *****
Prachtig boutique hotel midden in Palma. Ik heb hier geslapen toen ze net een maand open waren. Wat is dit een geweldige plek. Je bent hier echt gast. De kamers zijn schitterend ingericht. Er is een goed restaurant, een bar en een klein dakterras met een weids uitzicht over het oude Palma. Hier staan heerlijke zonnebedden en je komt er dan ook echt tot rust. Je kan op het dakterras lunchen (kleine kaart, maar heerlijke gerechten). Wil je een even een weekend eruit dan is dit hotel echt een aanrader. Let op hun aanbiedingen.

_{Beautiful boutique hotel in the middle of Palma. I slept here when they had just opened for a month. What a great place this is. You really are a guest here. The rooms are beautifully decorated. There is a good restaurant, a bar and a small roof terrace with a wide view of old Palma. There are lovely sun beds and you can really relax here. You can have lunch on the roof terrace (small menu, but delicious dishes). If you want to get away for a weekend, this hotel is highly recommended. Watch out for their offers.

PURO HOTEL ****
Ook dit hotel is van Zweedse eigenaren. Het staat bekend als een van de hipste hotels van het eiland. En dat is het ook, niet in de laatste plaats door de beachclub Puro Beach (daarover in een volgend blog meer). Ik heb hier een aantal keren geslapen. Het is gevestigd in een 18-de eeuws stadspaleis midden in het oude centrum van Palma. Ze hebben 51 bijzonder ingerichte kamers, de bediening is helaas niet altijd even vriendelijk. Op het dakterras is een kleine bar waar je heerlijk cocktails kan drinken. Het restaurant Oppio wordt goed bezocht. Er wordt eenvoudig, maar smakelijk gekookt.

_{This hotel is also of Swedish origin. It is known as one of the hippest hotels on the island. And it is, not least because of the beach club Puro Beach (more on that in another blog). I have slept here a number of times. It is housed in an 18th-century city palace in the middle of Palma’s old town. They have 51 beautifully decorated rooms, the service is unfortunately not always friendly. On the roof terrace is a small bar where you can drink delicious cocktails. The Oppio restaurant is well visited. The cooking is simple, but tasty.

BRONDO ARICHTECT HOTEL ****
Mijn zusje attendeerde mij op dit hotel. Middenin het centrum. Leuk voor een lang weekend. Het heeft 27 kamers. Ik vond de medewerkers niet super vriendelijk, maar dat kan heel persoonlijk zijn. Ziet er wel heel decoratief uit: een combi van urban chic en industrieel design.

_{My sister drew my attention to this hotel. Right in the centre. Nice for a long weekend. It has 27 rooms. I didn’t find the staff very friendly, but that can be very personal. It does look very decorative: a combination of urban chic and industrial design.

HOTEL ESPLENDIDO ****
In het noordwesten  van Mallorca (zo’n uurtje rijden vanaf het vliegveld) ligt Port Sollér. Dit is een piepklein badplaatsje waar het zusterhotel van het hiervoor genoemde Hotel Portixol staat. Ik heb er een aantal keren gelogeerd. Wat een super plek en wat een ontzettend aardige mensen.
Dit hotel werd gebouwd in 1954 en raakte in de loop der jaren in verval. De eigenaren van Hotel Portixol kochten het zo’n tien jaar geleden en maakten er in no time een zeer geliefde hotspot van. De combinatie van retro Scandinavische inrichting, een restaurant met heerlijke lichte gerechten en de warme Spaanse gastvrijheid maken dit een van mijn lievelingsplekken op Mallorca. Hoewel het hotel iets groter is dan ik gewend ben (74 kamers) is het toch heel intiem. Zonnen kan je op hun kleine privéstrand of aan de twee zwembaden (waarvan een alleen bestemd voor volwassenen, wel zo lekker rustig). De meeste kamers kijken uit op de kleine baai van Sollér. Hier geen massatoerisme. En… heerlijk eten in hun restaurant. Aanrader!

_{In the northwest of Mallorca (about an hour’s drive from the airport) lies Port Sollér. This is a tiny seaside resort where the sister hotel of the Hotel Portixol mentioned above is located. I have stayed there a number of times. What a super place and what extremely friendly people.
This hotel was built in 1954 and fell into disrepair over the years. The owners of Hotel Portixol bought it about ten years ago and in no time turned it into a very popular hotspot. The combination of retro Scandinavian decor, a restaurant with delicious light dishes and the warm Spanish hospitality make this one of my favourite places on Mallorca. Although the hotel is slightly larger than I am used to (74 rooms), it is still very intimate. You can sunbathe on their small private beach or at the two swimming pools (one of which is for adults only, so nice and quiet). Most rooms overlook the small Sollér bay. No mass tourism here. And… delicious food in their restaurant. Highly recommended!

HOTEL SON BRULL *****
Even buiten het dorpje Pollença ligt dit prachtige hotel. Het klooster is met veel respect voor oude details verbouwd tot een mooi chique hotel. Hier mocht ik een aantal dagen verblijven op uitnodiging van een lieve vriendin. Wat een weelde, echt wel aan mij besteed hoor. En ook nog eens helemaal naar mijn smaak ingericht. Alweer een aanrader dus. Er zit trouwens ook een heel goed restaurant bij waar met zelf verbouwde producten wordt gekookt.

_{Just outside the village of Pollença lies this beautiful hotel. The monastery has been rebuilt with a lot of respect for old details into a beautiful chic hotel. I was invited by a dear friend to stay here for a few days. What opulence, really for me. And also completely decorated to my taste. Highly recommended again. By the way, there is also a very good restaurant where they cook with home grown products..
