Ze is single en dat vindt Marion van den Blik (70) helemaal prima, want ze verkeert in goed gezelschap. Inmiddels is ze twaalf jaar vrijgezel, maar sinds ze haar eigen bedrijf heeft verkocht, geniet ze nog meer van de drie ’kerels’ met wie ze samenwoont: Arie, Jan en Piet.

Mijn kattenfamilie…
„Is echt een cadeautje. Ik heb drie je-weet-wel-katers: Arie, een grijze van bijna acht jaar, een chocoladekleurige van bijna vier, dat is Jan. En de jongste van één jaar heet Piet, die is crèmekleurig.
Ik vond twee katten eigenlijk wel genoeg, maar toen zag ik Piet en dacht: die is zo leuk, hij moet er maar bij komen. Ik heb bewust voor drie mannetjes gekozen. Britse kortharen zijn een beetje de honden onder de katten: erg gericht op mensen. En de mannetjes zijn nóg aanhankelijker.”

Beter dan een echte man…
„Zo hard wil ik het niet zeggen, maar ik ben wel op een leeftijd dat ik denk: bij een nieuwe man moet je weer wennen aan elkaar en rekening houden met de ander, wil ik dat nog wel?
Ik heb een heerlijk leven alleen en ik reis veel – dan wordt er natuurlijk goed voor de katten gezorgd – ik vind het wel goed zo. Aan katten hoef je nooit te wennen. Ze passen zich vanzelf aan, vragen niks en geven veel liefde zonder eisen te stellen.”

Op bed slapen…
„Doet Jan altijd. Zodra ik naar bed ga, komt hij erbij, en dan blijft hij de hele nacht rustig liggen. Piet komt meestal ’s nachts een kijkje nemen en nestelt zich dan aan het voeteneind. En Arie trekt zijn eigen plan, al komt hij wel gedag zeggen als ik ’s morgens wakker word. Ze hebben elk hun eigen karakter, net mensen.”

Verwennen
„Doe ik ze natuurlijk, ik zal nooit bezuinigen op goede voeding of verzorging. Ze hebben hun eigen designkrabmeubel, al is dat vooral omdat ik het zelf belangrijk vind dat-ie in mijn interieur past. Zo’n lelijke krabpaal komt er bij mij niet in.
Ik heb een prachtige bank en zeg altijd: ’Dat is de duurste krabpaal van Europa’, want je houdt ’m helaas toch niet krabvrij. Het gekke is, je kunt de mooiste spullen voor ze kopen, ze liggen toch het liefst in een lelijke doos van een online bestelling.”

Als ze me kattenvrouwtje noemen…
„Vind ik dat prima, dat bén ik ook! Ik weet nog dat ze mijn kantoor bij mijn allereerste baan als directiesecretaresse al ’de kattenbak’ noemden, omdat het vol met poezenprenten hing. Ik ben gewoon altijd gek geweest op katten. Als ik kijk naar die beestjes, die hun eigen leventje leiden om mij heen, voelt dat als pure mindfulness.”

She is single and Marion van den Blik (70) is totally fine with that, because she is in good company. By now she has been single for twelve years, but since she sold her own business, she enjoys the three “guys” she lives with even more: Arie, Jan and Piet.

My cat family…
“Is really a gift. I have three you-know-what tomcats: Arie, a gray one of almost eight years, a chocolate one of almost four, that’s Jan. And the youngest one-year-old is named Piet, who is cream-colored.
I thought two cats were actually enough, but then I saw Piet and thought: he is so cute, he should be added. I deliberately chose three males. British Shorthairs are a bit like the dogs among cats: very focused on people. And the males are even more affectionate.”

Better than a real man…
“I don’t want to say it that hard, but I’m at an age where I think: with a new man you have to get used to each other again and be considerate of the other, do I still want that?
I have a wonderful life on my own and I travel a lot – then of course the cats are well taken care of – I’m fine with that. You never have to get used to cats. They adapt by themselves, ask for nothing and give lots of love without making demands.”

Sleeping on the bed…
“Does Jan all the time. As soon as I go to bed, he joins me, and then he stays quiet all night. Piet usually comes in at night to take a look and then nests at the foot of the bed. And Arie makes his own plans, although he does come and say hello when I wake up in the morning. They each have their own character, just like people.”

Pampering…
“I do them of course, I will never skimp on good food or grooming. They have their own designer scratching furniture, although that is mainly because it is important to me that it fits into my interior. Such an ugly scratching post will not enter my home.
I have a beautiful couch and I always say, “That’s the most expensive scratching post in Europe,” because unfortunately you don’t keep it scratch-free. The crazy thing is, you can buy the nicest stuff for them, they still prefer to lie in an ugly box from an online order.”

When they call me a cat lady….
“Fine with me, that’s who I am! I remember that at my very first job as executive secretary, they already called my office ‘the litter box,’ because I had many cat prints on the walls. I’ve just always loved cats. Watching those critters live their own little lives around me feels like pure mindfulness.”
