BIJ HET KUNSTMUSEUM IN DEN HAAG: MARION EN ELLIE
Op straat in Den Haag, beter gezegd voor het Kunstmuseum, fotografeerde ik Marion van den Blik (1952) en Ellie Brik (1944). Marion draagt een hoed en houdt van kleur! Beiden wonen in deze stad, Ellie zelfs ‘om de hoek’ van dit museum. Het betekent dat ze vaker in het Kunstmuseum afspreken. Ze kennen elkaar inmiddels ongeveer twintig jaar. Ellie werkte destijds voor een tijdschrift aan een reportage over bijzondere winkels en ontdekte Marion’s winkel Betjeman & Barton. Een speciaalzaak in thee, toen – en nog steeds – een begrip in Den Haag. Marion: “Inmiddels heb ik mijn winkels, groothandel en webshop vijf jaar geleden verkocht. Naast de winkel fungeerde ik ook als groothandel en distributeur. Ik deed het natuurlijk allemaal samen met mijn team, maar al met al leverde die verantwoordelijkheid veel stress op. Nu geniet ik volop van mijn vrije tijd.
FILMCLUBJE
Het contact met Marion is altijd gebleven, ook door hun beider interesses, zoals voor films. Marion: “Ik heb met een gezamenlijke vriend een filmclubje opgericht. Onze achttien leden – waaronder Ellie – kunnen maandelijks uit drie films een keuze maken. De film met de meeste stemmen gaan we kijken.”Ellie: “Vooraf eten we meestal een klein hapje met elkaar en natuurlijk is er na afloop een ‘napraat’.” Marion: “Het aanbod is divers, van ‘filmhuis producties’ tot kaskrakers. De laatste was Rocco en Sjuul, een film over liefde op latere leeftijd. Bijna iedereen ging mee.”
MODELLEN
Het was heel erg leuk om deze vrouwen samen te fotograferen, hun ervaring als model heeft er ongetwijfeld mee te maken dat ze zich zo makkelijk bewegen voor de camera. Marion en Ellie staan allebei ingeschreven bij verschillende modellenbureaus. Marion: “Dankzij Ellie, zij werkte al langer als model en heeft mij aangespoord met de woorden ‘dat is ook echt iets voor jou’.” Het is zelfs wel eens voorgekomen dat beiden voor dezelfde opdracht werden gevraagd. Ellie: “Helaas viel de keuze uiteindelijk op geen van ons tweeën. Je moet leren om dat niet als een persoonlijke afwijzing te zien. Een opdrachtgever zoekt een bepaald type, je moet ook matchen met de andere modellen.”
ALLE DAGEN ZONDAG
Want Ellie schrijft nog steeds. De serie boekjes 52 zondagen wandelen & lunchen – wie kent ze niet – staan op haar naam. Dit jaar viert zij haar 80e(!) verjaardag, ter gelegenheid daarvan had haar uitgever Mo’Media nog één opdracht voor haar in petto: een boek maken over haar 80 mooiste zondagen in Nederland en België. Ellie: “Een boek waarin ik mijn liefde voor grote en kleine dorpen en steden mocht verzamelen. Ik hoop dat jullie, net als ik, genieten van de verhalen die je onderweg tegenkomt.” Dit nieuwe boek: Alle dagen zondag. Met als ondertitel: 80x eropuit in Nederland & België is vanaf deze week te koop.
Misja: “Inmiddels heb ik het boek in huis en vind het zo leuk om er in te neuzen! Omdat ik zelf ook nogal eens op pad ben – om mensen te fotograferen of perfecte tweedehands winkels te vinden – ken ik natuurlijk veel dorpen en steden die zij beschrijft. Maar Ellie geeft weer verrassend veel nieuwe tips; ik krijg in ieder geval zin om ook weer eens een lekker weekend op pad te gaan! Want Ellie heeft gelijk als ze zegt: “Het mag best elke dag een beetje zondag zijn.”

AT THE KUNSTMUSEUM IN THE HAGUE: MARION AND ELLIE
On the street in The Hague, better said in front of the KunstMuseum, I photographed Marion van den Blik (1952) and Ellie Brik (1944). Marion wears a hat and loves color! Both live in this city, Ellie even “around the corner” from this museum. It means they meet more often at the KunstMuseum. They have known each other for about twenty years now. At the time, Ellie was working for a magazine on a report on specialty stores and discovered Marion’s store Betjeman & Barton. A specialty tea store, then – and still – a household name in The Hague. Marion: “I sold my two stores, wholesale & webshop five years ago. In addition to the store, I also functioned as a wholesaler and distributor. Of course I did it all together with my team, but all in all that responsibility caused a lot of stress. Now I fully enjoy my free time.”
FILMCLUB
The contact with Marion has always remained, also because of both of their interests, such as for movies. Marion: “I founded a film club with a mutual friend. Every month our eighteen members – including Ellie – can choose from three films. The movie with the most votes we go see. “Ellie: ‘Beforehand we usually have a small snack together and of course there is an ’after talk’ afterwards.” Marion: “The selection is diverse, from ‘film house productions’ to blockbusters. The last one was Rocco and Sjuul, a film about love in later life. Almost everyone joined in.
MODELS
It was a lot of fun photographing these women together, their experience as models no doubt has to do with the fact that they move so easily in front of the camera. Marion and Ellie are both registered with different modeling agencies. Marion: “Thanks to Ellie, she had been working as a model for some time and encouraged me by saying ‘that’s really something for you too’.” It even happened on occasion that both were asked for the same assignment. Ellie: “Unfortunately, the choice ultimately fell on neither of us. You have to learn not to see that as a personal rejection. A client is looking for a certain type, you also have to match with the other models.”
Marion: “In the beginning modeling was quite exciting, but now I feel more confident and with a little bluff you get a long way. You have to climb in life sometimes.” Ellie adds: “Besides, a photoshoot or film shoot always makes a fun day, you really get pampered.” Fortunately, there is still time left to meet up occasionally. Marion and Ellie are also both very active on Instagram. Marion writes under the name Marion’s Mood about “the little things that make me happy.” It can be about her three cats, about fashion or about special recipes or cooking tips. Ellie posts about her outings, about museums, her modeling and, of course, about her book.
EVERY DAY SUNDAY
Because Ellie is still writing. The series of booklets 52 Sundays walking & lunching – who doesn’t know them – are to her credit. This year she celebrates her 80th(!) birthday, on the occasion of which her publisher Mo’Media had one more assignment in store for her: make a book about her 80 most beautiful Sundays in the Netherlands and Belgium. Ellie: “A book in which I could collect my love for big and small villages and cities. I hope you, like me, enjoy the stories you encounter along the way.” This new book: All Days Sunday is on sale from this week.
