Lissabon revisited deel V… A Vida Portuguesa

Het Portugese leven, ja dat betekent A Vida Portuguesa. Maar het is ook de naam van een van de leukste winkels die ik de laatste paar jaar tegenkwam. Alles wat hier wordt verkocht is Portugees. De eigenaresse Catarina Portas was een zeer succesvol journaliste; zij ontving veel prijzen voor haar publicaties over de Portugese maatschappij en cultuur. In 2003 werkte zij aan een artikel over oude Portugese producten. Tijdens haar onderzoek kwam zij prachtige, oude merken tegen die nog steeds op de traditionele manier worden geproduceerd en bovendien verhandeld in de originele verpakking van weleer. Dit zette haar aan het denken, hetgeen resulteerde in de opening van haar eerste winkel ‘A Vida Portuguesa’ in de wijk Chiado in Lissabon in 2007. Het was meteen een succes en vele internationale bladen zoals Time Out, Wallpaper en Monocle schreven lovend over haar missie. Het bleef niet bij één winkel. In 2009 opende zij een filiaal in Porto (terzijde: deze stad staat hoog op mijn lijstje) en in 2013 kwam er in Lissabon nóg een winkel bij: aan het Largo do Intendente. Deze winkel is gevestigd in een oude tegelfabriek (Viúva Lamego) met heel veel originele details. Op ruim 500 vierkante meter vind je een assortiment dat bestaat uit ruim drieduizend artikelen. Terecht dat deze winkel wel de mooiste van heel Lissabon wordt genoemd!

Tegenwoordig is Catarina niet alleen op zoek naar artikelen die onderdeel uitmaken van de Portugese cultuur, maar zij ontwikkelt ook nieuwe producten. Of dat nou ingeblikte sardines zijn, zeepjes, serviesgoed, manden, badkuipen of keramiek… het maakt niet uit. Zolang er een verhaal is of als het ‘saudade’ heeft (dat prachtige Portugese woord dat niet te vertalen is) past het in het assortiment.

Wat ik er kocht? Tja ik heb het simpel gehouden: gewoon een prachtige sardine van keramiek in een schitterend doosje. En voor iedereen thuis die ik een cadeautje wilde geven heb ik een blikje paté van sardientjes gekocht. Dat ik twintig kleine blikjes wilde laten inpakken, was dat een probleem? Nee hoor, met een glimlach werd het simpel maar mooi ingepakt. Catarina vond in 2015 een Engels prentenboek met Portugese ambachten. Een aantal daarvan wordt nu gebruikt voor de verpakking.

De winkels zijn een combinatie van Portugese traditie en moderne gastvrijheid en echt een ‘must see’ als je Lissabon aandoet. Heb je niet veel tijd? Ga dan in ieder geval naar de winkel aan het Largo do Intente.

The Portuguese life, yes that’s what A Vida Portuguesa means. But it’s also the name of one of the cutest stores I’ve come across in the last few years. Everything sold here is Portuguese. The owner Catarina Portas was a very successful journalist; she received many awards for her publications on Portuguese society and culture. In 2003 she was working on an article about old Portuguese products. During her research, she came across beautiful, old brands that are still produced in the traditional way and also traded in the original packaging of yesteryear. This got her thinking, which resulted in the opening of her first store ‘A Vida Portuguesa’ in the Chiado district of Lisbon in 2007. It was an immediate success and many international magazines such as Time Out, Wallpaper and Monocle wrote favourably about her mission. It did not stop at one store. In 2009 she opened a branch in Porto (as an aside: this city is high on my list) and in 2013 another store was added in Lisbon: on the Largo do Intendente. This store is located in an old tile factory (Viúva Lamego) with lots of original details. On over 500 square meters you will find a range that consists of over three thousand items. It is right that this store is called the most beautiful in Lisbon!

Nowadays Catarina is not only looking for items that are part of the Portuguese culture, but she also develops new products. Whether that is canned sardines, soaps, tableware, baskets, bathtubs or ceramics…. it doesn’t matter. As long as there is a story or if it has ‘saudade’ (that wonderful Portuguese word that cannot be translated) it fits in the range.

What I bought there, well I kept it simple: just a beautiful ceramic sardine in a beautiful box. And for everyone at home who I wanted to give a present I bought a tin of sardine pâté. Was it a problem that I wanted to have twenty small cans wrapped? No, with a smile it was simply but beautifully wrapped. Catarina found an English picture book of Portuguese crafts in 2015. Some of them are now used for the packaging.

The stores are a combination of Portuguese tradition and modern hospitality and truly a must see if you visit Lisbon. Don’t have much time? Then at least go to the store on the Largo do Intente.
