(English below – Oslo | food & drinks)
Er zijn zoveel leuke plekken in Oslo voor ontbijt, lunch en diner. Hou er wel rekening mee dat de prijzen hoger zijn dan je in Nederland gewend bent. Wijn en cocktails zijn zelfs heel duur door de hoge alcoholtax. Ik ga je via het ontbijt meenemen naar de koffie, dan naar de lunch om vervolgens ergens heerlijk te gaan dineren en af te sluiten met een cocktail. Hier mijn tips!
De Scandinaviërs nemen echt de tijd voor hun ‘fika’. Dat is een moment dat je even rustig gaat zitten om koffie te drinken – het liefst met iets erbij – en de tijd neemt om een gesprek met je collega’s of vrienden aan te gaan. Dit doen ze een aantal keren per dag, zowel op het werk als buitenshuis. Begrijpelijk dus dat er genoeg leuke gelegenheden zijn om van goede koffie te genieten. Ik noem er twee.
Steam Kaffebar
Wij hadden deze koffiebar ontdekt in de Østbanehallen en gingen er elke ochtend ontbijten. De Østbanehallen is een foodhall bij het Centraal Station en op loopafstand van ons hotel. Als je met het centrum in je rug de hoofdingang neemt, dan loop je zo tegen Steam aan. De barista’s krijgen een interne opleiding en dat is goed te merken, want de koffie is heerlijk! Neem er vooral één keer een kanelbolle (een traditioneel Scandinavisch kaneelbroodje) bij.
Tim Wendelboe
Als je een koffieliefhebber bent kan je niet om Tim Wendelboe heen. Deze koffiebar ligt in een van de leukste wijken van Oslo, Grünerløkka. Ze branden zelf hun koffie en ook zij leiden uiteraard hun eigen barista’s op. Het is er altijd druk maar iedereen wacht geduldig in de rij.SteaS
Fuglen Espressobar/Cocktailbar
Deze espressobar bezocht ik de eerste keer dat ik in Oslo was. Het retro interieur sprak mij erg aan. Letterlijk retro, want het behang en de bar stammen uit 1963 en zijn behouden bij de laatste renovatie! Ze hebben de retro sfeer versterkt met andere vintage stukken. Ik hou ervan.
Er is dus weinig veranderd, behalve dat ze inmiddels hele goede koffie serveren. En – beter nog – ze bleken ook een theekaart te hebben. Weliswaar een kleine, maar ze gebruiken hier losse thee en ik zag gelukkig een paar van mijn favorieten.
’s Avonds transformeert de espressobar in een hippe cocktailbar. Ik ben er op dat tijdstip nog niet geweest, maar dat staat op mijn lijstje voor de volgende keer.
Cafe Skansen
De eerste keer dat ik in Oslo was heb ik hier heerlijk geluncht. Er wordt echt Scandinavisch gekookt met lokale producten. Zoals je begrijp ligt de nadruk op vis, wat ik helemaal niet erg vind aangezien ik geen vlees eet. Uiteraard neem je hier de ‘Skagenrøre’: toast met garnalen, zure room, mayonaise, dille en foreleitjes. Een echte Scandinavische klassieker. Net als trouwens de ‘Kremet Fiskesuppe’ (romige vissoep) of de Sild (haring op twee verschillende manieren bereid). De volgende keer ga ik er zeker een keer ’s avonds eten.
Pastis Bistrobar
Dit Frans georiënteerde restaurant ligt aan de boulevard bij Aker Brygge. Ja je leest het goed Frans georiënteerd, dus geen Noorse keuken dit keer. We hadden een boottocht van twee uur gemaakt (later meer), hadden een gezonde trek, het was zonnig en we zouden een uur later richting vliegveld vertrekken. Het terras lag in de zon, dus de keuze was snel gemaakt. Ik had hier de allerlekkerste toast avocado met gepocheerd ei ooit. Dus wat mij betreft een absolute aanrader voor een snelle, lichte lunch.
Solsiden Restaurant
Tja, voor mij het absolute hoogtepunt van de keren dat ik in Oslo was en hier heb mogen eten. Wat een waanzinnige zaak is dit. Een industrieel gebouw aan de kade met een prachtige uitzicht over de Oslo fjord en alle schepen die voorbij komen. Origineel Noors eten, veel vis op de kaart. Hun specialiteit is een plateau-de-fruits-de-mer, maar hoe heerlijk dat ook is vind ik dat hier niet echt spannend. Klinkt een beetje verwend en dat is het misschien ook wel, maar wij wonen in Nederland natuurlijk ook aan de kust en in Scheveningen kan je dit ook prima eten, om maar te zwijgen over de plateaus die ik regelmatig in Zuid-Frankrijk kreeg voorgeschoteld. Ik koos als voorgerecht tartaar van rauwe zalm (okay, klinkt saai maar echt de allerheerlijkste ooit) en mijn zusje en mijn vriendin kozen voor de coquilles Saint-Jacques. Toen we het restaurant binnenkwamen rook het er zalig naar bisque van kreeft. Teleurgesteld waren we toen we deze niet op de kaart zagen, maar toen we de tarbot zagen wisten we waarom. Deze wordt geserveerd met een kreeftensaus. Driemaal raden wat we namen!?
Venti.Venti
De eerste dag van ons weekend Oslo kwamen Koosje en ik om 15.00 uur in het hotel aan. We kregen het voor elkaar vanaf dat moment toch nog bijna 19.000 stappen te zetten. Aan het eind van de dag liepen we bij Aker Brygge en merkten dat onze maag toch wel een beetje begon te knorren. Tijd om om ons heen te kijken waar we konden dineren. Het terras van het Italiaanse restaurant in het Astrup Fearnly Museum zag er wel heel aantrekkelijk uit. Je zal denken waarom Italiaans eten als je in Oslo bent? Tja het was overal druk, we waren moe, hadden trek en het terras lag zo mooi aan de Oslo fjord. We hebben er geen spijt van gekregen. We bestelden ‘Tagliolini alle Vongole’. Dat is toch echt wel een van mijn lievelingspasta’s hoor. De wijn die we erbij namen kwam precies op tijd. En met op tijd bedoel ik niet dat de gezellige Italiaanse ober het perfect op tijd bracht, maar we waren er gewoon aan toe!
Kranen Bar
Op de dertiende etage van het nieuwe Munchmuseet vind je deze prachtige cocktailbar. Je hebt er een prachtig uitzicht over de Oslo fjord en het centrum van Oslo. In de zomer kan je ook buiten zitten. Toen ik er was was het allemaal nog een beetje nieuw; de mensen in de bediening moeste duidelijk nog ingewerkt worden. Het gebeurde een aantal keren dat we tijdens ons bezoek werden opgeschrikt, omdat de lege flessen keihard in een open glasbak werden gegooid. Nadat we er met een grapje iets over zeiden werd het gecorrigeerd en boden ze ons excuses aan; ze hadden het zelf niet in de gaten gehad. Het is een heerlijke plek om aan het eind van de dag te genieten van een cocktail en het uitzicht. Dus zeker een aanrader!
Thief Roof Bar
Deze bar vind je op het dak van het beroemde The Thief Hotel. Heb je de Noorse serie Exit gezien, dan zal je deze bar herkennen want de vier vrienden hebben hier heel wat drankjes genuttigd. Ze maken er de heerlijkste cocktails en er is ook een menukaart met lichte snacks. Van hieruit kan je de Holmenkollen skischans zien liggen. Zomers is er ook een buitenterras.
Pier 42
Pal tegenover het Centraal Station vind je deze bar. Er zijn heerlijke loungebanken om in weg te zakken en de cocktailkaart is een mooi vormgegeven boekwerkje; een feestje op zich om het te lezen. Het was wel een halfjaar geleden dat ik voor het laatst mijn lievelingscocktail dronk, dus de keuze voor mij was niet zo moeilijk. Het werd een Negroni! En mijn zusje koos voor een Manhattan Sunrise. Er zat slechts één ijsblokje in het longdrink glas, maar wat voor een. Het was een enorm ijsblok, dat een flatgebouw in New York moest voorstellen. Op het glas was een zon geplakt; de bedoeling is om die – nadat je je cocktail hebt gedronken – op te eten. Het bleek gekonfijte mango te zijn. In de kelder worden regelmatig live jazz concerten gehouden. Als je er bent en van jazz houdt is het handig om de agenda in gaten te houden: Gustav Live Jazz Bar.

There are plenty of nice places in Oslo for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Keep in mind that the prices are higher than you are used to in the Netherlands. Wine and cocktails are even very expensive due to the high alcohol tax. I’m going to take you from breakfast to coffee, then to lunch and then to dinner somewhere delicious to finish with a cocktail. Here are my tips!
The Scandinavians really take the time for their ‘fika’. This is a coffee break, preferably accompanied with something sweet. They have the time to chat with their colleagues or friends. They do this several times a day, both at work and away from home. It is therefore understandable that there are plenty of nice places to enjoy good coffee. I will mention two.
Steam Kaffebar
We discovered this coffee bar in Østbanehallen and went there every morning for breakfast. Østbanehallen is a food hall near Central Station and within walking distance of our hotel. If you take the main entrance with the city centre at your back, you’ll walk right into Steam. The baristas receive in-house training and it shows, because the coffee is delicious! Be sure to try a kanelbolle (a traditional Scandinavian cinnamon roll) with it.
Tim Wendelboe
If you are a coffee lover, you cannot miss Tim Wendelboe. This coffee shop is located in one of Oslo’s nicest areas, Grünerløkka. They roast their own coffee and of course train their own baristas. It is always busy but everyone waits patiently in line.
Fuglen Espresso Bar/Cocktail Bar
I visited this espresso bar the first time I was in Oslo. The retro interior really appealed to me. Literally retro, as the wallpaper and the bar are from 1963 and were kept in the last renovation! They have enhanced the retro atmosphere with other vintage pieces. I love it.
So little has changed, except that they now serve very good coffee. And – even better – they turned out to have a tea menu too. A small one, admittedly, but they use loose tea here and I was lucky enough to see a few of my favourites.
In the evening, the espresso bar transforms into a trendy cocktail bar. I haven’t been there yet during cocktail time, but that’s on my list for next time.
Cafe Skansen
The first time I was in Oslo I had a lovely lunch here. They really cook Scandinavian food with local products. As you can understand, the emphasis is on fish, which I don’t mind at all as I don’t eat meat. Of course you can have the ‘Skagenrøre’: toast with shrimps, sour cream, mayonnaise, dill and trout eggs. A real Scandinavian classic. Just like the “Kremet Fiskesuppe” (creamy fish soup) or the “Sild” (herring prepared in two different ways). Next time, I will definitely eat there in the evening.
Pastis Bistrobar
This French-orientated restaurant is on the boulevard at Aker Brygge. Yes, it is French, so no Norwegian cuisine this time. We had made a two-hour boat trip (more about that later), had a healthy appetite, it was sunny and we would have to go to the airport an hour later. The terrace was in the sun, so the choice was easily made. I had the most delicious avocado toast with poached egg ever here. So for me, an absolute must for a quick, light lunch.
Solsiden Restaurant
Well, for me the absolute highlight of the times that I was in Oslo and had the opportunity to eat here. What an amazing place this is. An industrial building on the quay with a beautiful view over the Oslo fjord and all the ships that pass by. Original Norwegian food, a lot of fish on the menu. Their speciality is a plateau-de-fruits-de-mer, but as delicious as that is, I don’t find it very exciting. It sounds a bit spoilt and maybe it is, but of course we live on the coast in the Netherlands and in Scheveningen you can eat this also very well, not to mention the plateaus that I was regularly served in the South of France. I chose raw salmon tartare as a starter (okay, sounds boring but really the most delicious ever) and my sister and my girlfriend chose the coquilles Saint-Jacques. When we entered the restaurant, it smelled deliciously of bisque of lobster. We were disappointed not to see it on the menu, but when we saw the turbot, we knew why. It is served with a lobster sauce. Three guesses what we took!
Venti.Venti
On the first day of our weekend in Oslo, Koosje and I arrived at the hotel at 3 pm. We still managed to walk almost 19,000 steps. At the end of the day we walked by Aker Brygge and noticed that our stomachs were starting to growl a bit. Time to look around to see where we could have dinner. The terrace of the Italian restaurant in the Astrup Fearnly Museum looked very attractive. You might think why eat Italian when you are in Oslo? Well, it was crowded everywhere, we were tired, had a healthy appetite and the terrace was so beautiful with a view at the Oslo fjord. We did not regret it. We ordered ‘Tagliolini alle Vongole’. That really is one of my favourite pastas. The wine that was served with it came just in time. And by on time, I don’t mean that the kind Italian waiter brought it perfectly on time, but we just needed it!
Kranen Bar
On the thirteenth floor of the new Munchmuseet, you’ll find this wonderful cocktail bar. It offers a great view over the Oslo fjord and the centre of Oslo. In the summer you can also sit outside. When I was there, it was all still a bit new; the waiters obviously needed some training. It happened several times that we were startled during our visit, because the empty bottles were thrown loudly into an open glass container. When we jokingly said something about it, it was corrected and they apologised; they hadn’t noticed. It is a lovely place to enjoy a cocktail and the view at the end of the day. So definitely recommended!
Thief Roof Bar
This bar is located on the roof of the famous The Thief Hotel. If you have seen the Norwegian series Exit, you will recognise this bar as the four friends have had many drinks here. They make the most delicious cocktails and there is also a menu with light snacks. From here, you can see the Holmenkollen ski jump. In summer, there is also an outdoor terrace.
Pier 42
This bar is right opposite Central Station and part of the Hotel Amerikalinjen. There are lovely lounge sofas to sink into and the cocktail menu is a beautifully designed booklet; a treat in itself to read. It had been six months since I last drank my favourite cocktail, so the choice for me was not difficult. It was a Negroni! And my sister chose a Manhattan Sunrise. There was only one ice cube in the long drink glass, but what a one. It was a huge ice block, which was supposed to represent an apartment building in New York. A sun was stuck to the glass; the idea was to eat it after drinking your cocktail. It turned out to be candied mango. Live jazz concerts are regularly held in the basement.
